A Symphonic Prophecy: 12-Year-Old Carey Tan and The Rise and Fall of Humanity

When a 12-year-old boy chooses the grandeur of the symphony to express his reflections on the future, what we hear goes far beyond melodies and harmonies. It is the voice of a precocious soul, knocking on the door of a restless age.

Composer Carey Tan with a depth of thought and artistic courage far beyond his years, presents his third symphony: The Rise and Fall of AI Humanity. This is no student exercise, no whimsical experiment—it is a science fiction epic told through music, a powerful meditation on technology, humanity, and destiny.

The first movement, “The Construction of AI Civilization & Humanity,” opens with radiant rhythms and a sense of boundless possibility, ushering in a new human era built upon artificial intelligence and robotics. The story then unfolds through the second movement, “Dwelling in Reality ,” the third, “Nature and the Universe,” the fourth, “Collapse and Destruction,” and finally the fifth, “Ashes and Echoes.” Across these five movements, Carey constructs an entire civilizational cycle—a sweeping musical journey from creation to collapse.

With a keen sensitivity and a soaring imagination, this young composer offers us a glimpse of a possible tomorrow. Through shifting harmonies, evolving textures, and imaginative orchestration, he paints a vivid sonic narrative: from the birth and flourishing of a AI machine-powered world to blind reliance, and ultimately, to implosion from within. It is not merely a tale of “rogue robots,” but a modern fable about human complacency, hubris, and neglect.

In an age when artificial intelligence is reshaping our lives at unprecedented speed, Carey’s symphony rings with urgent relevance. It transcends entertainment, becoming a resonant warning, reminding us that while technology may illuminate our path, the human spirit must remain the guiding light.

Composer’s Note:

“This symphony is a symphonic allegory about a future society dominated by artificial intelligence.

The first movement portrays the rise of AI and the seemingly improved society it creates, while the sound of the gong and turbulent passages foreshadow potential destruction.

Two reflective movements follow: one contrasts reality with the AI-driven society, using numerous augmented chords and dissonant triads; the other depicts the beauty of nature through calm melodies, major and minor seventh chords, and gentle woodwind textures.

The next movement presents the decline of AI and the collapse of human civilisation, featuring parallel ‘conversations’ between humanity and AI, as well as stepwise figures that bring instruments gradually in and out.

The final movement depicts the remnants of a fallen civilisation and the emergence of new hope. The mournful section employs dissonant seventh chords, sustained tones, and a slow tempo; the hopeful section uses bare triads consisting only of octaves and fifths, ultimately concluding in C major.

Throughout the compositional process, I shaped musical notation and melodic contours to align closely with the narrative. I composed this work during my travels in the United Arab Emirates, inspired by the landscape and experiences of the journey. In this symphony, AI is presented as a potentially dangerous force, while reality and humanity itself remain essential.”
