This excerpt comes from the final movement, Ashes and Echoes, of Carey Tan’s Symphony No. 3, The Rise and Fall of AI Humanity.

After the collapse of AI civilisation, humanity has finally broken free from the system that once controlled it. The artificial order has fallen. The machines no longer organise every part of life, and the world must begin again from the ruins.

But freedom does not return easily.

For a long time, human beings lived without work, struggle, or responsibility. They were protected, provided for, and quietly weakened by comfort. Now they must rebuild life through their own effort: working, repairing, creating, and learning once more how to keep the world alive by human hands.

At first, this return is painful. There is confusion, weakness, fear, and even a brief sense of decline. Without AI’s control, humanity must face the weight of real freedom and the responsibility that comes with it.

Yet the Earth still belongs to humanity.

Led by those who awakened first, people slowly recover their strength. They return to life under the sky, within nature, and through labour, creativity, and human connection.

This ending is not simple victory. It is rebirth after ruin: fragile, difficult, but full of hope. From the ashes of collapse, a new light begins to rise over the human world.
