In the concert, Carey introduced The Explorers as his first piano concerto. Through its three movements — the Pacific Ocean, the Sahara Desert and Mars — the work expresses the curiosity, courage, loneliness and determination of explorers. It also suggests that composition, like exploration, is a journey towards an unknown world.
