Dystopia is a piano trio composed by Carey Tan at the age of ten for violin, cello, and piano. Written during his preparation for the ALCM Composition Diploma — which he later passed with Distinction — the work demonstrates an early yet strikingly mature structural and conceptual awareness. Lasting approximately five minutes, the piece constructs a tense and thought-provoking sonic landscape within a compact form.

The trio is primarily set in 5/8, but constantly shifts between changing time signatures, including 5/4, 7/4, and 9/4, creating rhythmic instability and forward momentum. The work is deliberately non-tonal, built from diminished chords, seventh chords, and dissonant harmonic structures that evoke an atmosphere of unease and alienation. It opens with an “alien invasion” theme, symbolising disorder and tension spreading through a fragile society.

Structurally, the piece alternates between turbulent, driving sections and calmer, nonchalant passages. In the serene moments, the violin and cello exchange melodic and harmonic roles, forming an intimate dialogue, while the piano supports with subtle harmonic colour. The turbulent sections intensify through compound perfect fifths, dynamic contrasts, and rhythmic propulsion, building toward a powerful apex. Notably, the tempo markings descend mathematically by intervals of eight, reflecting Carey’s fascination with numerical structure and proportional design.

The piece concludes with a fading B major chord — luminous yet distant — suggesting ambiguity rather than resolution. Rather than depicting catastrophe alone, Dystopia serves as a musical reflection on instability, order, and the fragile balance within society, revealing a young composer already engaging deeply with structural logic and expressive intensity.
