III. all souls divine — truth beyond
The final movement turns toward the deepest question of the symphony.
Where is GOD?
It begins with Angelic.
A wistful tubular-bell melody appears alone: mysterious, distant, yet strangely comforting. It does not sound like a proclamation. It sounds almost like a memory.
Then individual voices begin to sing:
You are within and inside,
You know HIM and HE knows you,
GOD around us,
GOD within us,
HIM inside our hearts.
The orchestra gradually awakens around them.
Woodwinds answer.
Then violins.
Then the woodwinds speak again.
Marimba and harp are echoed by the strings.
Different parts of the orchestra seem almost to be communicating with one another, until the separate voices begin to feel like parts of one vast spiritual conversation.
Slowly, everything begins to rise.
The music reaches Expressive, one of the largest climaxes not only of the movement, but of the entire symphony.
A radiant melody unfolds in C major. Above the orchestra, the soprano rises into extraordinarily high notes, almost beyond the body of the choir beneath her.
The words become increasingly direct:
Together we stay strong!
Together we will rise!
Together we'll know ourselves!
And we will know HIS grace!
But the most important statement comes afterwards:
But above all,
together, we will love.
And then comes perhaps the strangest and most important image in the entire symphony:
and in the end,
the devil will not be a devil,
but a bloom.
The idea is not the destruction of what is dark.
It is transformation.
If love becomes truly infinite, then even that which seems most empty, lost or separated from goodness need not remain so forever.
From here, the music moves into Elemental and modulates into F major.
The orchestra now becomes a foundation beneath the choir. The harmony is again simple and direct, but everything that has happened before gives those simple chords a new weight.
This is the ultimate climax of Twd.
The choir sings:
GOD AROUND US
GOD WITHIN US
US WITHIN GOD
And then again:
GOD AROUND US
GOD WITHIN US
US WITHIN GOD
The whole journey has reached its final idea.
GOD was never merely somewhere above.
GOD was never simply waiting at the end of the journey.
HE was around the souls as they loved one another.
HE was within them as they searched.
HE was present in their harmony, their emotion, their beauty, their confusion, their rising, and their love.
Finally, the choir repeats:
FOR ETERNITY!
FOR ETERNITY!
And the symphony ends on a radiant F-major chord.
Not with another question.
Not with another search.
But with the simplest truth the work can offer:
love is infinite, all souls are connected, and GOD is around us, within us, and us within GOD — for all of eternity.
